Abstract
During 1987 and 1988 the original 1733 wrought iron railings to the important early-18th-century town house, Vault Hall, 24-26 Low Pavement, Nottingham, were the subject of a pioneering conservation and research project at the Ornamental Smiths' Workshop of English Heritage. Ironwork which had been deemed irreparable was carefully conserved and repaired under the supervision of its Research and Technical Advisory Service (RTAS), contacted by the Conservation Officer of Nottingham City Council. The financing of the project is indicated, and the steps taken prior to treatment, such as dismantling, sorting, labeling, documenting are detailed. Flame-cleaning was the process selected to best assess corrosion. The primary aim for the intervention was to conserve as much of the original ironwork as possible, even when corroded, unless it could no longer fulfill its function. The techniques and materials used are described, including the importance of maintaining an even coat of paint on the iron (two coats of zinc phosphate epoxy primer, plus one alkyd undercoat and two alkyd topcoats). The value and uniqueness of the project is discussed in the conclusion.
