Abstract
The papers used for the scroll mounting process in Japan are described. Included are the bast fibers of <i>kozo</i> (Broussonieta Kazinoki Sieb.), * 2gampi*1 (Wikstroemia sikokiana Franch. et Sav.), * 2mitsumata*1 (Edgeworthia papyrifera Sieb. et Zucc.), and hemp (Cannabis sativa L.). Described in detail are the main <i>kozo</i> papers used in scroll mounting, including misu paper, Uda paper, * 2Sekishu-banshi*1 paper, and <i>tengujo</i> paper. <i>Kozo</i> papers are also discussed in relation to their physical characterics and how this influences the scroll making process as well as the properties of the finished scroll.
