Abstract
The Japanese mounter work within a variety of forms: hanging scrolls, handscrolls, folding screens, sliding panels, etc. As the form of the mount changes so do the materials used, the ways in which the paste is employed and the many combinations of the two. A history and description of hanging scrolls is given. To illustrate some of this variety. The twelve essential features of the japanese hanging scroll are illustrated and described (honshi, ichimoni, chuberi, jo-ge, futai, tsuya, jiku, etc.). The major divisions (shin, gyo and so) and subdivisions of the mounting schemes are explained. Finally the construction techniques and materials are described. Photograph, drawings, reference.
