On cleaning and restoration it was discovered that the landscape surrounding the figure of the prince was over overpainted. Cleaning revealed a dramatically different setting for the figure. The article describes: the painting's original support and original size its composition; reconstruction of the earlier stretcher the painting technique; the 5 previous restorarions; the 1985-1986 restoration and the decision to remove the landscape overpainting; restoration treatment. The relining canvas of 1903 was very weak at the edges but adhesion between all the layers was otherwise good. The edges were strengtheed by strip lining (beva). Once it had been established that the original painting was in good condition the overpaint was removed. A new area of foliage and sky was reconstructed. Retouching was in egg tempera, powder pigments, ms 2a glazes and varnish. Many illustrations including an x-radiograph. Notes and references.
