When brought to the Hamilton Kerr Institute for treatment, the painting's surface was obscured by multiple layers of discolored varnish and repaint. Problems arose concerning the differentiation of original paint and overpaint, necessitating complete analysis of the painting. It was found that most of the bituminous-like layers were original paint (the author provide a short discussion of bituminous paints); that all of the yellows were lead-tin yellows; and, that while working on the painting, Gentileschi made many changes in the composition, some of them major.
