Abstract
The painting of the family of Henry VIII was severely damaged by water during the 1986 fire of Hampton Court (London). After removal of discoloured varnishes a grey fatty layer was found to be present over much of the paint layer. This had to a certain extent protected the painting. 3 photographs, 3 notes/references.
