Granite is one of the most commonly used stones in ancient Indian sculpture and architecture. The weathering of granite was investigated by subjecting samples of the stone to the effect of aqueous solutions and found that weathering is relatively more pronounced in alkaline rather than in acid media. Similarly the uptake of silica is greater in distilled water than in sea water.
