Desalination of stone and ceramic objects which are fragile or water-sensitive is impossible or at least risky. Attempts were made to find a consolidating product that would allow desalination. After various tests, Araldite Ciba (AY 103-HY 956, 5/1) was used at 10% in pure methanol or methanol with toluene in order to remove the salts from an Egyptian head in water-sensitive marly limestone and a 16th-century funeral monument in Avesnes stone, the surface of which was powdery. The method is efficient, but its application is not always easy. The best results are expected from the use of ethyl silicate.
