Abstract
The characteristic optical properties of Daguerreotypes makes it difficult to assess changes in their appearance due to aging or treatment solely on the basis of photographic records. A non-destructive method for monitoring these changes using reflectance spectroscopy is described. This method is accurate because it directly relates changes in optical properties to physical changes in the Daguerreotype microstructure. See also AATA 20-2225.
