Abstract
Lead isotope ratios in ancient Chinese and Japanese coins as well as in some Japanese galena samples were measured with a mass spectrometer of surface ionization type. The isotope ratios of the Japanese galena ores fall in a narrow range: 2.05-2.10 for208Pb/206Pb and 0.844-0.858 for207Pb/206Pb. The two Japanese coins (1668 and 1769 A.D.) analyzed also fall in this range, while the Chinese coins (621-1821 A.D.) spread outside this range.
