Abstract
During the repair work carried out in 1943-1952 of the pagoda of the Horyuji temple, Nara, 31 samples from various parts of the bronze spire were analyzed by T. Dono and G. Nakagawa. The results of analyses that had not been published are presented in this paper. The parts of the spire made in the 8th century contain small amounts of lead (less than 1%), whereas those made during the repair in 1696 have large amounts of lead (10-27%). Arsenic, found in all the samples (1.16-3.95% arsenic) seems to have been added intentionally. Lead isotope ratios of the spire show that it contains lead of Japanese origin. See also AATA 8-1047 and 17-1637.
