Storage boxes and wrapping paper sold as archival quality were tested and found to degrade to pH 5.7 to 4.9 in 3 to 5 years from time of purchase. The author suggests that institutions using such materials monitor their pH periodically. Often archival boxes are made of poor quality board (lignin and ground wood present) and any added alkaline buffer is quickly consumed in combating internal acidity. Kahle also suggests that VPD papers cyclohexylamine carbonate saturated interleaving sheets) be considered for vapor phase deacidification of the degrading storage boxes. He does not see the health threat that others report with the VPD sheets. The results of an accelerated ageing test conducted by the Library of Congress on Hollinger Corp. box board (grey with white liner) in 1977 are given.
