Abstract
A conservation chemist's response to Dr. Wingate's article on Kitchen Chemistry book conservation which appeared in the June 6, 1977 (AB Bookman's Weekly. Hey gives acceptable paper deacidification compounds (calcium hydroxide, calcium bicarbonate, magnesium bicarbonate, magnesium methoxide, methyl magnesium carbonate, barium carbonate) and explains how sodium derivatives harm paper, and that Dolomite and Milk of Magnesia tablets are ineffective as deacidifiers. She also gives acceptable and safe solvents for Scotch tape removal, and presents arguments against the use of borax in paste, leather dressing, and fungicides.
