Abstract
The Oxford Research Laboratory has now analyzed over 150 Jingdezhen porcelain bodies, ranging in date from Five Dynasties (A.D. 907-960) up to the present day. The method used had been atomic absorption analysis, giving the major and minor constituents. Most of the samples have been either Yingqing (Qingbai; ca. 12th - 13th century) or Blue and White (post - 14th century), although a few Shufu (ca. 12th century A.D.) and Monochromes (post - 18th century) have also been analyzed. Certain trends are visible in the time-concentration plots of some oxides, particularly alumina, which suggest changes in the balance of the raw materials used for the bodies. This becomes more apparent when the fired oxide analyses are converted to probable pre-fired mineralogies, on the basis of some reasonably well-founded assumptions about the raw materials. These conclusions can be compared with analyses of similar examples at other laboratories. This work suggests a likely chronology for the development if the art of porcelain manufacture at Jingdezhen, which was the major center of Chinese production for about 600 years, although complications arise from the practice of using different grades of raw material for different sizes and qualities of vessels. It is possible, however, that such trends may be useful in detecting later copies of classic wares, even though original and copy were made at Jingdezhen.
