Abstract
Optical and scanning electron microscopy, atomic absorption spectrophotometry, electron microprobe analysis, and x-ray diffraction are used to determine the composition and microstructure of the bodies and glazes of the brown stoneware and fine white stoneware produced by John Dwight at his pottery at Fulham towards the end of the 17th century. The firing temperatures employed in the manufacture of the stonewares are also estimated. The results show that the compositions of the stoneware bodies match the recipies for prepared bodies given in the surviving copies of parts of two of Dwight's notebooks. Comparison of composition and microstructure of the white stoneware with that of Chinese and European porcelain indicates that Dwight fairly closely reproduced Chinese porcelain bodies, but because he did not use a lime-alkali slip glaze, he failed to reproduce the smooth, rich appearance of Chinese porcelain glazes. and European porcelain indicates that Dwight fairly closely reproduced Chinese porcelain bodies, but because he did not use a lime-alkali slip glaze, he failed to reproduce the smooth, rich appearance of Chinese porcelain glazes.
