Abstract
The red garment kept in Shitenno ji temple, Osaka, as the temple's most treasured object is a ho coat said to have been worn by the Prince Shotoku. The present article confirms that the red color of the ho coat was dyed in the decoction of Japanese madder (Rubia cordifolia L. var. Mungista. Miq) using lye mordant. See also AATA 20-1823.
