Abstract
Bog bodies are preserved by the peculiar conditions of the bog. The three factors necessary for natural preservation are that the body of water be deep enough to discourage maggots, rodents, and foxes, yet still enough to inhibit bacterial decay; that the pool contain tannic acid; and that water temperature level be maintained below 4°C. The Grauballe man has been preserved in a solution of oak bark, for the acid preserves flesh.
