Abstract
The removal of inorganic deposits which result from the burial of Ancient Egyptian wooden objects poses some specific problems. The animal glue binder present in the pigment and ground layers precludes the use of water or other aqueous agents, and the lack of varnish or other protective coating on the surfaces of the objects complicates mechanical intervention. Tests were carried out utilizing a variety of solvents, with an amine/methanol mixture proving the most effective in softening the deposits. Experiments utilizing Vulpex (potassium methyl cyclohexyl oleate) were later instituted in an attempt to find a less toxic alternative. After successful tests on models, the detergent, which is soluble in organic solvents, was used to clean two objects from the Late and Roman periods.
