Abstract
Formation processes of use-wear polishes and their detailed features were revealed by the use of a scanning electron microscope on the siliceous shale samples. Bone and antler polishes tend to be flat, while plant polishes are domed. Progressive developments of the polishes were observed with the use of silver coating and stereophotography. Two types of surface damage were observed: cutting type accompanied with striations, and fracture type (pitting). Diagnostic features of polish types are mainly produced by the hardness, viscous, and elastic properties, and the surface texture of the worked materials. -- AATA
