Abstract
During the survey of the construction site of a new wing of Tokyo University Medical Department Hospital a pit named L32-1 was found which contained numerous fragments of Chinese ceramic wares of the first half of the 17th century, and of Japanese Hizen ceramic wares of the second half of the same century. These fragments were the remains of the fire in 1682 of the house of the Daishoji fief which had been situated on the present campus of Tokyo University. Five fragments of Japanese color-glazed wares were chemically studied, and all the glazes contained lead. The body clays contained 0.10-0. 13% titanium dioxide, suggesting a possibility of old Kutani type. The biscuit firing temperature was estimated by x-ray diffraction and infrared absorption of the body clays to be 1100-1200°C. -- AATA
