Dr. Mason Hale, a Smithsonian botanist has come to the rescue of ancient Mayan stone monuments threatened with defacement by lichen infestations by spraying of a sodium hypochlorite commercial bleach on a heavily infested area of a stela killed the more sensitive lichen and after four months made it possible to brush the rock surface clean with a soft brush.
