The bust of Flora was acquired in 1910 as a sculpture of Leonardo da Vinci. Soon its authenticity was questioned for various reasons. Recently the bust was identified as a modern imitation because of the detection of stearic acid. Since this compound is part of not only modern stearine but also beeswax, this argument seems insufficient. A series of samples was analyzed by means of gas chromatography. A characteristic series of organic compounds of the wax was identified, which are characteristic for spermaceti. This product was a common product in the 19th century, when the bust could have been made; however, the whales were also hunted in earlier periods. -- AATA
