Abstract
The four talks presented at the discussion session of the 1983 Association of Art Historians (United Kingdom) Conference focused on conservation. Dr. Derek Linstrum spoke about architectural conservation and the specific problems faced by museum directors who are responsible for historic buildings. Dr. Jonathan Ashley-Smith discussed the technical examination of an object as part of the search for information concerning it. David Bomford, Chief Restorer at the National Gallery (London), presented a number of theoretical and practical considerations in the restoration of damaged paintings. Joyce Plesters explained the technical examination of paintings and discussed the relevance of the findings to the study of art history. -- AATA
