Based on extensive collection relocations in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the article gives practical instructions for safely moving museum objects within a building or between nearby buildings. It discusses preliminary study of the object and the route to follow, the use of carts in preference to hand carrying, characteristics of suitable carts, selection and training of personnel, and padding and wrapping materials to protect objects from vibration, environmental changes and surface damage.
