Abstract
The term fluorocarbon used in this paper is restricted to its literal sense to denote saturated compounds containing carbon and fluorine only. In particular, this paper deals with recent application in the electrical and electronic fields which arise from the unique combination of chemical inertness and physical properties of these fluorocarbons. With the advent of sophisticated electronic equipment, the problem of removing a large heat-flux from a given surface area has become acute and conventional means of heat transfer, e.g., forced air convection, forced liquid convection, have been tried and found wanting. A comparison of the physical fluorocarbons with properties of other fluids used for cooling electrical systems suggest that fluorocarbons are likely to be superior.
