Abstract
The tanning of hides and skins is an art dating back to prehistoric times; the application of science to leather tanning began towards the end of the 19th century. Subjects dealt with include pre-tannage (i.e. methods of preserving the skins until the tanning proper is done), removal of hair, tanning processes, wearing properties of leather, deterioration and defects. -- AATA
