Abstract
A standard method consists of systematic extraction of volcanic glass particles from the samples followed by rapid and exact measurement of their refractive indices. Four columnar samples examined are from the Torihama site (Fukui prefecture), Itai site (Hyogo prefecture), and Kyoto University archaeological site. In comparing the detected volcanic ash horizons with the wide spread tephra of known ages, four chronological horizons are clarified in the Torihama drilling samples (ca. 24720, 9300, 6300 and 2000-3000 BP), two in the Itai site samples (ca. 24720 and 20000 BP) and two in the Kyoto University samples (ca. 24720 and 6300 BP). One of the samples of the Itai site was found to have been deposited in an aquatic environment, whereas others were terrestrial deposits. -- AATA
