Abstract
Miniatures are frequently unsigned and unattributed; however, clues may be found to the identity of the artist and/or sitter within the housing. Such signatures on secondary materials, inscribed papers, or scragfitto on the case interior or bezel at times provide evidence for or corroboration of the attribution of a miniature, enhancing its value and historical importance. Certain skills are needed by the conservator of miniatures; nevertheless, those not skilled in goldsmithing or lens grinding can treat miniatures provided they are sensitive to certain qualities of miniatures. Treatment methods are described in detail.
