Abstract
Prior to restoration, x-ray examinations of the famous icon named in the title -- one of the rare survivors of invasions and wars in the area -- revealed that it was older than museum records showed. A large number of repairs could be detected. The layer-by-layer contact x-ray method used indicated losses as well, which are enumerated. Repaintings were dissolved (Abstractor's note: the organic solvents used are not further identified) or removed by scalpel in order to arrive at the original. Observations on the physical appearance of the earliest painting, on the supports, and on remnants of silver coating, added to iconographic and stylistic observations, allowed the icon to be redated to ca. 1320. A brief survey of the various renovations the icon had undergone in connection with historical events in Ryazan concludes this paper. -- AATA
