Abstract
This paper outlines a general method and use for technical examinations of Russian painted panel icons and metal oklads, and some related conservation problems. A brief review is also given of examinations of selected Russian icons in the United States. The author calls for thorough documentation before authentication, and a discussion of ethical and technical concerns for conservators of these Russian religious objects. -- AATA
