A project was conducted by the Smithsonian Institution and the National Gallery using a TRIGA reactor at the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute using three test paintings employing both thermal-neutron induced-autoradiography and high- resolution gamma ray spectroscopy to show the usefulness of this technique. The second phase of the project was to conduct a feasibility study of modifying the NBSR thermal column for neutron- induced autoradiography use.
