Abstract
Vegetative remains of four dyeplants (<i>Rubia tinctorum</i> L., or Madder, <i>Genista tinctoria</i> L., or Dyer's Greenweed, <i>Diphasium complanatum</i> (L.) Rothm, or Club moss, and $2<i>satis tinctoria $$ L., or woad) found in 9th-10th century deposits at York are described in detail. A fifth species, <i>Reseda luteola</i> L., or weld, so far only found as seeds, is also described.
