Abstract
Maria Faydherbe attempted to join the local guild and was denied membership; she complained to the local magistrate, but eight master craftsmen brought countercharges requesting a competition. This study suggests that the problem was a conflict between her innovative technique and the entrenched establishment. Her sculpture is illustrated in the context of other similar pieces from the period (all Virgin and Child). Stylistically she practiced natural modeling; she was also innovative in her use of materials.
