Abstract
A test method was developed to monitor the release of formaldehyde during textile curing operations, especially release from newer ultralow formaldehyde reactants. The method was used to determine the effect of resin type on formaldehyde release from 100% cotton broadcloth. Ultralow formaldehyde glycol capped reactants significantly reduced formaldehyde during curing and gave very low residual formaldehyde on the fabric. Some commonly used scavengers were evaluated to determine their influence on formaldehyde emissions. The reactivity, thermal stability, and hydrolytic stability of the scavenger were important factors in their control of formaldehyde release.
