Abstract
Craftsmen in the antebellum United States retained their livelihood in the era of the power loom by weaving fancy carpets and coverlets with a barrel loom. This loom used a cylinder with pegs to control the warp ends and form the shed that produced the pattern pick. The cylinder was changed for each different pattern. Recovered documents reveal that these fancy double woven coverlets and carpets existed before the jacquard was introduced into the area. The barrel loom was a transition between the problematic draw loom and the jacquard. The patterns used in fancy weaving, too complicated for available power looms, were in great demand in the 1800s.
