Abstract
Describes a highly evolved system for recording and analyzing the mass of material obtained from the All American Pipeline Project, a 1,400 mile or 2,250 km corridor from Santa Barbara, California to Austin, Texas, USA. The computer system collects data from a barcode reader, a video-imaging system, digital scales, and digital calipers. These data are manipulated on INFORMIX (a relational database) running under UNIX, and special software was developed for the auto-recording and the interactive analyses. Some disadvantages are noted, but advantages include: better measures of relative abundance through measurement of surface area; error reduction; and ease of analyzing artifacts through their images.
