The traditional man's kilt is made from eight yards of fabric and is heavily pleated in the back; the woman's kilt skirt uses half as much fabric. Construction of a kilt requires pleating the back half of the kilt, hand sewing the pleats, self-facing the front edges, interfacing the pleats, and attaching a rolled waistband and closures.
