Abstract
The optical effects created by variables in glaze compositions and firing processes that were used to create glazes on ancient ceramics are described by a ceramic scientist. A summary of the ancient history of glaze technology worldwide is accompanied by photographs, diagrams, and a chart of the chemical compositions of some glazes analyzed at the Smithsonian Conservation Analytical Laboratory. It is noted that modern replicas of Chinese Longquan celadon can fool even experts.
