Abstract
Although it is often observed that there is a doubling of reaction rate with every 10 degree C rise in temperature, in fact the relation between temperature and reaction rate is an exponential function of both the temperature and the activation energy of the reaction. A table of reaction rates for different activation energies is provided. Cellulose reactions tend to have high activation energies, and reaction rates approximately double with every 5 degrees C rise in temperature. The observation that paper is more sensitive to temperature than is generally realized may help make temperature a higher priority consideration in specifications for archival storage.
