Abstract
A stencil reading Transferred from Pannel to Canvass by G. HOWORTH , which was found on the back of an Italian painting, led to the discovery that G. Howorth was George Howorth, a nationally prominent Boston restorer, active in that city from 1839 to 1864. In a book he wrote in 1859, titled <i>The Restoration of Oil Paintings, he claimed to be the first in this country to transfer paintings. The transfer of the Italian painting is discussed together with other aspects of his work, including a relining process which uses a newsprint interleaf.
