Abstract
A polychromed sculptured 24-piece orchestra from the island of Java, basically composed of wood and bronze percussion instruments, was acquired by the Field Museum from the World Columbian Exposition of 1893. Its conservation treatment was begun in January 1977, ending in December of that year. February 1978 marked the first public performance of this musical ensemble in 85 years. Described are: condition before treatment; analyses of pigments, medium, metals, wood, varnish, and grime particles embedded in varnish; materials and methods employed in treatment.
