A recurring problem in the treatment of paintings on fabric is the alteration of paint texture during the lining process. The investigation and experiments described consider these aspects of the lining procedure: 1) use of cushioning materials and their ability to diminish weave imprint during infusion, and 2) effectiveness of various interlining materials in alleviating weave interference. The various materials tested were classified and rated on the basis of their performances, and the findings applied to the treatment of two nineteenth-century American paintings. An assessment is made concerning the final outcome of the experiments and treatments and suggestions for further investigation are offered
