Conservators are presently using toxic chemicals such as thymol for anti-fungal treatment of artistic materials. Experiments on leather have identified three non-toxic alternatives: calcium propionate (a food preservative), Tinactin (a topical drug) and haloprogin (the active ingredient in Halotex, a topical drug).
