After a detailed explanation of the principles of freeze-drying, the construction of an apparatus for the dehydration of wet archaeological objects is described. The procedure of cooling the objects is explained. Experience with different materials is discussed and the results obtained with this equipment, constructed for the finds from the Viking period at Haithabu in Northern Germany, are compared with procedures used in other institutions employing this technique. -- AATA
