Abstract
In the case of extremely badly damaged textiles there is no alternative to the use of natural or synthetic adhesives. Using a painted silk banner, badly damaged by earlier restoration, an example methods and techniques for cleaning flattening, fixing paint layers and stabilising the fabric are discussed. A humidity chamber proved very useful for working on the stiff brittle material as it made the fibres pliable. Acrylic dispersions (mixed, or alone, and at different dilutions) were found to provide the most flexibility in adhesives power and attaching temperature. Also they present neither personal nor environmental working hazards. The acrylic dispersions used were lascaux 360 hv and 498 hv. Klucel g in ethanol was also used for fixing paint. Photographs, including colour, references.
