The history of the development of the recently suggested environmental standards for the storage of books and manuscripts is given. At the moment observations from technical reviewers and interested institutions/persons are being put together. The writer emphasises that while scientific evidence for specifying exact storage conditions may be lacking, there is a great deal of experience of book conservation under different conditions. This should also be incorporated. Finally the standards will be something to aim for, but are not expected to be required.
