Abstract
In a survey in Sydney, Australia, conservators rated the microbiological purity of treatment water as a high priority. However, analysis showed bacteria to be present at high levels in all waters tested. Materials conservation appears to have adopted the water purification technologies of industry but not the monitoring methodologies. An examination of international water quality standards and the industrial case studies leads to the suggestion that conservation-specific water standards be developed.
