Bronze artifacts from the Barbarian Regions in collections in China were studied in order to trace the transfer of foundry technology from the major cultural centers to peripheral areas. Artifacts and technology from the Zhongyuan area were a standard from which artisans in the Barbarian Regions of Hufang, Yue, Wu, Zhu, Dian, Nanyue, Chu, and Bashu worked. In this first attempt to inquire into the general characteristics of casting technology throughout the Barbarian Regions, the author describes the construction and decoration of vessels from each of those regions and provides a very detailed, step-by-step description of the preparation of a large bronze drum from Nanyue (Guangxi Museum Collection).
