This project involved the complete conservation of a whole room of Chinese wallpaper (120 m²) from Penrhyn Castle, North Wales, a property of the National Trust. The work took place from November 1992 to March 1993, during the winter period while the Castle was closed to the public for essential cleaning and maintenance. The wallpaper was first documented and surface-cleaned mechanically in situ. It was then removed from the walls and transported to the Victoria and Albert Museum studio in London where it was further cleaned, degraded backings removed, and the wallpaper relined and repaired. The walls of the room were then prepared with a cross-laminated insulating layer of paper/textile/paper to protect the wallpaper from any possible future wall movement. The conserved wallpaper was returned to the Castle, where it was rehung and its missing areas reintegrated.
