Abstract
Instances of corrosion are described in connection with glue, varnish, paint and plastics, wood, specific volatile vapours, micro-organisms, summarised as follows: Glues: Severely corrosive; urea formaldehyde (some batches); Moderately corrosive: phenol-formaldehyde (acid hardened); Only slightly corrosive or not at all: urea formaldehyde (some batches), resorcinol paraformaldehyde, animal glue, casein glue, blood albumen glue; No reports of corrosion: epoxide resins. Varnishes and paints: Corrosive: all air-dried, oil-based varnishes and paints; linseed oil varnishes; alkyd and alkyd ureaformaldehyde stoving paints; gold size. Non-corrosive: Cellulose lacquer (not oleo-resinous or containing phenol formaldehyde); shellac varnish; stoving paints and varnishes when fully stoved. Insulating materials and plastics: Corrosive: Insulating tapes, phenol-formaldehyde (some types), polyester (some types). No reports of corrosion: polyvinyl chloride, polythene, polytetrafluorethylene, epoxy compounds. Woods: Severely corrosive: Oak, sweet chestnut. Moderately corrosive: European steamed beech, Douglas fir, birch ply, western red cedar. Somewhat corrosive: Birch, gaboon, teak, spruce ply. Slightly corrosive: Parara pine, spruce, elm, iroko, ramin, obeche, African mahogany, walnut. The metals most susceptible are cadmium, lead, magnesium and zinc. Brass and bronze are moderately resistant. Volatile corrosion inhibitors should be used with care in mixed assemblies containing brass, cadmium, copper, lead, magnesium, solder or zinc. -- AATA
